Case Study

Presenting Situation

Beth and Paul are a couple, who both have a diagnosis of an intellectual disability encountering significant challenges in parenting, leading to family breakdown.

Challenges faced

1

The children were often late to school.

2

They didn't have regular meals.

3

They didn’t have a regular routine and there were concerns in relation to their hygiene.

The family faces multiple challenges including:

  • Chronic lateness and late pick-ups from school.
  • Inadequate meals and a heavy reliance on Uber Eats.
  • A lack of routine leading to bedtime struggles and hygiene concerns.
  • Difficulties in maintaining their home environment.
  • Difficulties with planning and organisational skills.

Where do we come in?

Through NDIS funding, Beth and Paul were referred to the Parenting Outreach Program. Together, we crafted a collaborative work plan, ensuring structured support tailored to their needs.

Multi-Service Collaboration:

The program worked alongside therapists, incorporating insights on learning styles and creating visual schedules.

Hands-On Support:

The outreach worker provided hands-on support to the parents/caregivers in providing guidance and implementing strategies to develop routines, ensuring the children had adequate meals, were dressed appropriately, personal hygiene was attended to, and attended school on time.

Household Support:

The family received support and guidance in creating and implementing a visual schedule to assist with completing household tasks and attending to daily chores.

After 12 months, the family achieved significant milestones, including consistent punctuality to school, well-balanced meals, improved personal hygiene, and a tidier home environment.

The introduction of a reward chart has motivated the children to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness in their rooms.

Continued Support and Future Goals

Recognizing the ongoing need for assistance, the Parenting Outreach Program is committed to supporting Beth and Paul in developing cooking and money-handling skills.

The goal is to gradually reduce the family's reliance on Uber Eats, fostering self-sufficiency and promoting healthier eating habits. The program will guide the family in creating a fortnightly meal plan and developing essential shopping and cooking skills.
